Yoga Community

The Andiappan Yoga Community is a non-profit, fully volunteer organization whose mission is to share yoga with those who may not be able to afford yoga classes or those who may have special needs or circumstances. All of our yoga instructors are certified with the International Yoga Academy, are passionate about yoga, believe in its benefits, and are committed to teaching yoga on purely a volunteer basis.  If you would like to host or arrange yoga classes for your NGO organization or charity please contact AYC.

ABOUT US

Inspired by the teachers and compassion of Dr. Yogananth Andiappan, AYC was founded as the Yogananth Andiappan Community in 2010 by a group of his students from the International Yoga Academy and Anahata Yoga in Hong Kong.  To honour his Father and Guruji Dr. Asana Andiappan in the field of yoga and research, the community was renamed as the Andiappan Yoga Community in 2013 on Guruji Dr. Asana Andiappan’s 85th Birthday.

The Andiappan Yoga Community (AYC) aims to bring yoga to the wider community, especially those who do not have the means to enjoy the benefits of yoga or have special needs and circumstances.  AYC is a registered non-profit, volunteer based arm of The International Yoga Academy (IYA) that trains in the tradition of Thirumuloor’s therapeutic yoga.

Dr. Yogananth Andiappan who is a renowned yoga therapist and teacher lead and develop the community in its endeavour to spread the knowledge and teachings of yoga as taught by his Father and Guruji Dr. Asana Andiappan.  As a founder of the Asana Andiappan College of Yoga and Research Centre in Chennai India, Guruji Dr. Andiappan has dedicated his life to the study and teaching the therapeutic benefits of yoga based on the teachings of Sage Thirmuloor.  In fact, the college of Yoga and Research Centre is one of the few remaining centres dedicated to promoting authentic yoga traditions and values over commercial practises.

The AYC volunteer teachers are sharing their yoga knowledge and experience with others as a service to the community.  Community involvement continues to increase.  Currently, there are more than one hundred and fifty certified and active instructors who teach yoga to more than a dozen yoga community classes in Hong Kong alone.  AYC partners with a number of Hong Kong NGOs including Changing Young Lives FoundationMother’s ChoiceYouth OutreachSt. Anne’s Filipino Catholic Group,Tuen Mun Hospital, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Jockey Club Tai Koko Tsui Integrated Services Centre, Hong Kong AIDS Foundation, Early Psychosis FoundationLok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and also weekly free yoga classes to the overseas worker community in Hong Kong.

With such an enthusiastic team of volunteers, the Andiappan Yoga Community (AYC) was registered as a non-profit organization with the Hong Kong Government.  The official AYC website was launched at www.yogacommunity.org.   This gave the Andiappan Yoga Community a new standing in not only Hong Kong but across Asia.

“As people who participate in the AYC community classes may live with limited resources or through difficult circumstances, we hope to provide free yoga classes as well as try to provide yoga mats, blocks, straps and to transport them when providing the classes”, said Dr. Yogananth Andiappan at the official launch of the community.

The Andiappan Yoga Community looks to donors to provide mats, subsidize venues and for financial support periodically and during fund raising events.  As it is registered as a non-profit organisation, it is clear to all the partners that they are working together for the common good of the community.  The non profit status will further our efforts to raise funds for others, as we have causes such as Animals Asia, Breast cancer awareness as well as victims of natural disasters.

Please look at the events page of the website for the latest updates on the work to date in Hong Kong and Asia.  Please visit www.yogacommunity.org to keep up with the latest AYC news, projects and events.  Please join us in our mission to enrich lives with yoga either as a volunteer, partner and/or contributor.
